Winter 2020

As we enter into a new decade, I am excited to be named the 107th President of the Toronto Transportation Club for the year, 2020. I am honoured to have this opportunity, to give back to an industry that has been an integral part of my career, and who’s purpose aligns with my core values.

Our board members, and every President before me have had a vision, to bring this Club to its greatest potential. The leadership and our board Members have led this Club to garner the distinction of being the oldest, largest and most successful Club of its kind, in North America.

I am proud to be a part of this Club and while reflecting on the past, will remain steadfast on our purpose with 20/20 vision.

I am passionate about this Club and looking forward to working with our board members as we continue our pursuit of expanding the scholarship program to create greater opportunity for access to the application process and enriching the lives of our recipients. The board will remain committed to planning and executing excellent events that further our relationships, directly impact our members’ business opportunities and, all the while, contribute to the future of our scholarship recipients.

I am very proud to have been a part of making changes to our Scholarship program, in 2019, when the program was expanded to allow any corporate member in good standing for one year, access to 5 individual applications. This coupled with the announcement that we were adding a fourth scholarship, is a true reflection and a direct result of our board’s commitment and the support of our members, along with the many sponsors throughout the years.

I want to offer congratulations to the recipients of this year’s Toronto Transportation Club Scholarship – Brooke Lewinsky, Rachel Benninger, Roman Caldecott and Sarah Pullano. Congratulations and Good Luck in your future studies.

I would like to thank outgoing President James Mitton for his commitment. James, we are all deeply appreciative for your dedication and the leadership you have given wholeheartedly to the Club. I personally am honoured to call you one of my dearest and closest friends, which all began right here - as members of the Transportation Club!

I would like to recognize our outgoing Past President, Mike Fontaine. A gracious thank you to Mike Fontaine, who has been an inspiration to all of us on the board in his role as Past President in 2019. Mike your professionalism, and enthusiastic dedication to the Club has left an incredibly positive impact to not only the Club, but to all the individuals who have served on the board during your tenure. We know that as a past president you will always be available and knowing that I can count on your guidance and council in 2020, is very meaningful to me.

Joining us back on the board is John Foss our 100th Club President, taking the chair as 1st Vice President. John has been an integral and ardent supporter of this Club, his contribution immeasurable and we are all thrilled to have John back on the executive and looking forward to his leadership in his upcoming role as our President in 2021! Welcome back John, my dear friend, and esteemed board member!!!

Congratulations to Liam O’Briain who was elected to the position of 2nd Vice President at our AGM. I look forward to working with Liam in the coming years, who I know will make a wonderful contribution to our Club. We have welcomed a few new board members in 2019, who I am so looking forward to working with, as well as our current board, as I regard them as dynamic industry influencers, who will continue to shape our Club with laser vision for the next decade!

2019 was an incredible year, including 2 new events “Need for Speed” in January and Oktoberfest, in the Fall. We have had the fortune of record attendance at these 2 events, and sell outs at all events, including our Annual Dinner which was flawless! Our Annual Dinner keynote speaker, Jon Montgomery was captivating, and motivated the audience with a Live Auction, that drew in a contribution of $18,500 - which will go directly to our Scholarship!

Our next event is just around the corner - Connect. Please get your tickets early and watch for updates on all of our events, including our Pop Ups in the Spring and Fall. We are really excited about our newsletter called “The Link”, and trust you are enjoying the human-interest stories, Club members’ news and Francis Lalonde’s safety tips.

Membership renewals for 2020 are now due. If you have not yet renewed, please visit our website www.torontotransportationclub.com or call Denise Cardy at 416-886-5450 for more information. I encourage you to take a look at your membership with our Club and explore the opportunity of welcoming additional members of your organization through corporate memberships, student memberships, and of course, retiree memberships. The cost is minimal and the opportunities are endless. Remember, your membership counts and is so very important to the Club’s health and vitality.

I look forward to networking with everyone at all our events in 2020. As we head into the New Year, I want to wish everyone a Healthy, Safe and Prosperous 2020!
